International Pen Pals: How to Write Across the World

One stamp, $1.75, mails a letter to any country on earth.

That number is the whole pitch. A stamp you’ve never seen, handwriting shaped by another alphabet, a postmark from a town you can’t pronounce: an international pen pal is a window, and it fits in an envelope.

The warm case for writing abroad is easy to make, and everyone makes it. What most guides skip is the logistics: where to find someone, what the postage costs, how long the envelope travels, and whether customs will want a word. All of it is below, with numbers checked in July 2026.

How do you find an international pen pal?

Three good routes: Postcrossing mails you postcards from strangers around the world with no commitment at all; Global Penfriends matches pen pals by shared interests, free, at any age; International Pen Friends has compiled matched lists by hand since 1967. Between them, nearly every country on the map is reachable.

Postcrossing is the low-commitment start. You request an address, the site hands you a random member somewhere in the world, and you mail them a postcard. Once yours is registered, a different stranger mails one to you. Nobody is yours to keep; that’s the design. It has run for more than twenty years, counts over 800,000 members across 207 countries, and is free apart from the postcard and the stamp. Global Penfriends is the place to find someone to keep. Family-run since 1995, free to join, open to all ages, and matching works by shared interests rather than luck. By their own account, a human reviews every profile and children are kept fully separate from adults. The free tier limits how many brand-new conversations you can open; a credit trickles back every day or so, and replying to a conversation you’ve already started costs nothing. International Pen Friends is the elder of the field. It has matched pen pals since 1967, which means it was doing this before email existed to be tired of. Humans compile your list by age group and hobbies: you receive a dozen addresses to write to, and your own name goes out to fourteen members in your age bracket, so letters you never asked for start finding your mailbox. How much does international postage cost?

A Global Forever stamp costs $1.75 as of the July 2026 rate change, and it mails a letter under one ounce from the United States to any country in the world. The same stamp covers an international postcard. Three or four sheets of paper and the envelope stay under an ounce.

That July change also put the domestic stamp at 82 cents. The entire rest of the planet costs 93 cents more.

Rates rose on July 12, 2026, from $1.70 to $1.75, and they will creep again. Forever means forever, though: a Global Forever bought today stays valid through every future increase, no matter what the price climbs to. Buy a sheet and stop doing math.

How long do letters take?

Plan on a week or two each way for most routes. Nearby, well-connected countries land at the faster end; remote or rural addresses take the slow end and sometimes more. Add your pen pal’s reply and the return trip, and a full exchange settles into a rhythm of roughly a month.

That pace sounds like a flaw until you live with it. Don’t read silence as disinterest; read it as distance. A letter that took two weeks to reach you gets read slowly, at the table, sometimes twice.

Do international letters need a customs form?

No. A letter, a card, or anything that is only paper needs no customs form, to any country. Customs declarations exist for goods, so a package with items inside gets a short form at the post office counter. Keep your envelope to paper and you will never fill one out.

Paper covers more than you’d think: photos, a recipe card, a page torn from a magazine all ride inside a letter without ceremony. The day you want to send an actual gift (a brass bookmark, a tin of tea), mail it as a package and fill out the form; it takes a few minutes at the counter, and the clerk has seen a thousand of them. Most pen pal friendships never get past paper.

What do you write to someone across the world?

Ask about the things that don’t translate: what a holiday actually feels like there, what’s for breakfast, what the light does in winter, which of your everyday habits they find strange. Then answer the same questions about your own street. Don’t assume, ask; the asking is the friendship.
